Lingenfelter Performance Engineering has been a staple in the performance aftermarket world for decades. Started in 1973 by John Lingenfelter in Decatur, Indiana, LPE has tested the performance limits of GM-based products and helped set the standard for reliable aftermarket builds. John made a name for himself at the 1/4 mile by building and driving his own creations to record setting speeds including 13 NHRA national event victories. LPE was put firmly on the map when the Lingenfelter team helped build the legendary “Sledgehammer” C4 Corvette, a relatively tame looking street car that John drove to speeds in excess of 250 mph in 1988.

By the introduction of the C5 Corvette in 1997, Lingenfelter was properly in the aftermarket tuner race as was able to completely take advantage of GM’s new LS platform engines. In an era where over 400 horsepower was a big deal, 400 ponies was the starting point of LPE. Early into LS1 development, a 500 horsepower Stage 1 package became available, already a 150 horsepower boost from stock. At the turn of the century, the engineering wizard of John and crew unveiled their Stage II Package on the Corvette with THIS CAR! The Stage II package was a fire-breathing animal with two Garrett turbochargers fitted to the Lingenfelter-built LS1, producing 650 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque! To assist in handling all of this power, massive Baer Brakes, Penske adjustable shocks, Hotchkiss sway bars, and a plethora of extra go-fast goodies were added to this ‘Vette.

During the winter of 2000, John took this car to 7.5 mile oval at the Transportation Research Center in Ohio to prove the cars capabilities. On that cold winter day, John achieved a top speed of 226 mph in 5th gear, a truly eye water speed for a car with stock aerodynamics. While the rear end ratio was modified to 2.73:1 for that run, a 3.43:1 rear end was installed for 1/4 mile testing at Muncie, Dragway. The red C5 ran a best time of 10.8 seconds at 133.5 mph with John behind the wheel. While these numbers are strong for 2024 standards, these were massive numbers at the change of the century. Only a handful of C5 Stage II Twin Turbo cars were ever built, with serial # 001 being the most significant. After the testing was complete, the owner Dick McKee put 50,000 miles on the car in 7 years, proving its reliability. In 2007, the car was sent back to LPE for a new LS7 Twin Turbo engine with even MORE power. Now boasting 800 horsepower and over 900 pound feet of torque, this Corvette is an unchained monster with an incredible history and detailed documentation since day one. MOTORVAULT is proud to represent this high-performance icon and help carry on this incredible story to the next owner.
