The Indianapolis 500 is a massively important event in the automotive world and has a large impact on many people across the globe. For hard core racing enthusiasts, the Indy 500 is as big as it gets. 300,000 in attendance, millions more watching at home, over 100 years of history, and 33 bad fast race cars make the 500 extremely special. To many in Indianapolis, it is much more than a race.

To the team at MOTORVAULT, the Indy 500 and its history create raw passion. While modern day Indycar and the 500 are close to our heart, the cars and stories of years past are our focus. For many seasoned race fans, the late 1960s and early 1970s were the pinnacle for legendary cars to run Indy. As Indianapolis's dealer for Backdraft Racing, we wanted to create subtle tributes to these great race cars on the canvas of Backdraft Racing Roadsters.

This particular example is a tribute to the 1968 Shelby Turbine IndyCar driven by Denny Hulme in practice and testing. This was the only factory attempt by Shelby to make the Greatest Spectacle in racing. Mr. Shelby decided to withdraw both entries prior to qualifying before their exhaust exit “opening trick” was discovered by USAC as it was an illegal advantage. Shelby and his crew of genius engineers were masters at pushing boundaries. The Series 68 cars tributing 1968 Indy 500 entries is a project we are proud to present and will continue creating further cars from '68 in the near future.
