When thinking of iconic sports cars throughout the decades, the Porsche 911, Corvette, BMW M3, Nissan Z, and Jaguar E-Type come to mind. If you were to take a poll on the top 10 most iconic sports cars of all time, you’d also find the Mercedes-Benz SL on many lists. Introduced in 1954 as Mercedes’s entry into the booming state-side sports car market, the SL was intended to be a toned-down version of their 300 SLR racecar. The original 300 SL wasn’t only a spectacular grand-touring car to drive, it also was stunning to look at especially with its signature Gullwing doors. A few years later, a roadster version was unveiled along with its little brother, the 190 SL. After the first generation of SL cars came to a close in 1963, the car had made a massive impact and was here to stay.
Fast-forward to 1971, and Mercedes reveals the third generation SL, the R107. This new SL came with striking sharp bodylines, more powerful engines, and enhanced comfort amenities. The R107 SL Roadster provided the ultimate grand touring experience with elegant styling, silky smooth power, and a tight but comfortable handling package. As the thrid generation SL progressed, the car continued to improve in all areas. 15 years into the R107 production, Mercedes introduces the final and best version yet, the 560 SL. Built from 1986 until 1989, the 560 SL was a fitting send-off to one of Mercedes longest standing and most successful models of all time. Powered by a 5.6-liter V8 producing 227 horsepower and 279 lb/ft of torque, the 560 SL moved down the road at a brisk pace. Add a gorgeous color combination of Smoke Silver over Red Leather, this car checks all of the right boxes.
The vehicle was originally sold by a Boulevard Motors Inc in St. Louis, MO and leased under United Auto Leasing in Evansville, IN and delivered to its first owner in Evansville, IN in November 1985. Service stamps and documentation show the vehicle remained in Evansville, IN until 1994. From 1994 to 2007 we have limited documentation, but Carfax shows reported mileage of 69,942 in 2007 and the clean Indiana title shows purchase date in November 2007. The next available service record from 2015 shows vehicle was brought in from storage since July 2010 with 92,446 miles (invoice 18265) and was only driven 200 miles in five years. We believe this to be a two owner vehicle and shows no signs of any accident history.
Since acquiring the vehicle in October 2023, we had all fluids flushed and brought the vehicle up to date on service investing $5,000. We then stored the vehicle until November 2024 to prepare to list the vehicle for sale in early spring of 2025. In preparation to list, we realized the vehicle had an issue restarting when hot. So we invested another $7,500 and refreshed the entire fuel system and performed annual maintenance to ensure the vehicle is ready to be driven and enjoyed.
