In 1953, Chevrolet shocked the world with their new sports car, the Corvette. Within a month of the unveiling, Ford began working on a response to their Detroit competitor. By late 1954, the blue oval was ready to show the world what they had come up with. Enter the Thunderbird, a 2-door open top “personal car” with a small block V8 and an endless amount of sporty abilities. While the new creation shared many design cues from other Ford products, nothing else in the lineup was nearly as sleek, sharp, or fast. Even though Ford sold the car initially as more of a luxury and comfort cruiser, the 292 Cubic inch V8 drop top was no mockingbird. Chevrolet’s fiberglass creation was faster than the “T-Bird’, the sales results were the exact opposite. Corvette sold 700 total Corvettes in 1955 while Ford pumped out over 16,000 Thunderbirds in its first year, an absolutely smashing result.
This particular 1955 T-Bird was restored in the early 1990’s where a period continental kit was added and the paint was changed to Black. The car remained in the same family in Washington state until 2019 when the famed SCCA driver, Toly Arutunoff, purchased the car. It remained under his ownership until mid-2022 when another Oklahoma based collector purchased the vehicle. In June of this year, the T-Bird made its way to Indiana for the first time. The new owner always wanted a black ‘55 Bird and was very happy to cross that off his list. Unfortunately, he passed away this fall and the family reached out to MOTORVAULT to represent the car. We are honored to offer this American classic on behalf of the owners family.
