1993 Porsche 968

     By the 1980’s, Porsche was starting to master the art of the front-engine sports car. The German Company has always been best known for their rear-engine layout, but they were able to expand their horizons with success. This began with the small but mighty 924 and continued into the stout 944 and powerful V8 928. After the 944 had run its course, Porsche introduced the 968 in 1992 as the next evolution of its predecessor. The 968 was strikingly similar to the 928 from the front end, as it shared exposed pop-up headlights and an integrated front bumper. The rounded and smooth nature of the front fascia continued throughout the exterior of the car, moving away from the prior sharper-edge design of the 944.

      On the flip-side, the 968’s interior remained largely unchanged from the 944 S2. As well remaining the same was the use of a 3.0 Liter 4-cylinder, but in this case was enhanced. The bore and stroke of the 3-liter was increased along with the compression, giving the 968 an additional 29 horsepower. Matted to the 4-cylinder was a choice of a new 6-speed manual or 4-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, in which this car is fitted with. These quirky and quick P-cars were only in production for 4 years, making these cars quite uncommon. During that time, just over 4,600 of them landed stateside in total. Not only is the 968 seldomly seen, but it was significant as it was the last front engine Porsche until 2003 and the last 4-cylinder until 2016.
